Google gives Rotary US$3.5 million to help end polio

Rotary International has received a US$3.5 million challenge grant from the Google Foundation, a nonprofit managed by Google.org, in support of Rotary’s top goal to eradicate polio worldwide. Rotary will raise funds to match the Google Foundation grant dollar-for-dollar over one year.

The grant and matching funds will directly support polio immunization activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a partnership spearheaded by the World Health Organization, Rotary International, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Following the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s $100 million grant to Rotary in November, Google.org represents another response to the call for support by Rotary and its partners to finish polio,” says Dr. Robert S. Scott, trustee chair of The Rotary Foundation. “Both challenge grants reflect strong confidence in Rotary’s leadership role in working relentlessly to help achieve this vital public health goal for the world’s children.”

Eradicating polio has been Rotary’s number-one priority since 1985. To date, Rotary has helped immunize nearly two billion children and contributed $650 million to the GPEI, a figure that will rise to more than $850 million by the time the world is certified polio-free.

Globally, the number of polio cases has fallen from 350,000 annually in the mid-1980s to approximately 2,000 cases in 2006. The GPEI has succeeded in slashing the number of cases by 99 percent and decreased the number of polio-endemic countries from 125 to just 4: Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan.

“This grant comes at a crucial time for the initiative, as more funds are needed to reach children in the most challenging regions of the world,” says RI President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson. “We have the technical tools to beat polio, and we’re almost there. All we need is for the rest of the world to follow the Google Foundation’s lead in supporting the effort to eradicate this vaccine-preventable disease once and for all.”

Albeit a little long, this is an excellent article about the progress being made in changing attitudes in Nigeria with regard to polio immunizations. This is information that should be passed on to your fellow club members and anyone who cares to listen!

Remember: the #1 goal of The Rotary Foundation is - Polio eradication is realistic!

First Lady flags off IPDs: appeals to Governments to fund immunization programme

27 JULY 2007 | BIRNIN KEBBI -- The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua has flagged off the July 2007 Immunization Plus Days (IPDs) taking place in twelve high risk polio states and the Federal Capital Territory in the country from 28 – 31 July 2007. The event took place at the Abdullahi Fodio Islamic Centre in the town.

The choice of Kebbi state for the flag-off was strategic. The state is one of those that have not reached the national target coverage for routine immunization, as a result of which wild polio virus still circulates in the state. Also intermittent outbreaks of measles, pertussis, neonatal tetanus and meningitis have also been reported from various Local Government Areas in the state.

Flagging off the campaign, Hajia Yar’Adua noted that immunization is one of the cost effective strategies to reduce child mortality and morbidity, and therefore achieve the 4th Millennium Development Goal. She called on state and LGA authorities to increase their commitment for this most important strategy, to reduce unnecessary child deaths and disability in our society.

Hajia Yar’Adua said that the country’s commitment to achieving the MDGs would be greatly enhanced if Primary Health Care (PHC) was functional and effective. She therefore appealed “to States, Local Government Areas and development partners to continue to provide the necessary support to the development of a viable PHC system”. Adding that the oral polio vaccine is safe and easy to administer, the First Lady called on all parents and caregivers to ensure that their children are immunized during the IPDs and routine immunization.

In his speech, the Governor of Kebbi state, Alhaji Sa’idu Usman Nasamu said that the state recognizes the poor health indices of women and children in the country, a situation he said the state government was doing its best to tackle. Pledging the state’s support for the implementation of the country’s Health Sector Reform, the NEEDS and achievement of the MDGs, the Governor added that the state had put in place a number of schemes to reduce maternal and child mortality, including the increase of financial support to child survival interventions.

The traditional institution was adequately represented by the Emirs in all the Emirates of the state. Speaking on their behalf, the Emir of Gwandu and Chairman, State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Mohammed Bashar reiterated their resolve to redouble their efforts in mobilizing their people for the immunization programme. The Emir, who said prevention was better than cure, added that they welcomed immunization, since according to him, “majority of our people cannot afford the prohibitive cost of curative medicine”.

Alhaji Bashar promised that the Council of Chiefs in the state would give maximum support to the IPDs but called on implementers of the programme to endeavour to discharge their responsibilities not only in the urban but also in the rural areas, where majority of the people live.

The Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Mrs. Titilola Koleoso-Adelekan, in her address, noted that Nigeria had made remarkable progress in polio eradication and routine immunization. With latest onset of 26 May 2007, 128 cases of wild polio virus have been recorded in the country in 2007 as against 626 cases as at the same time in 2006. Nigeria now accounts for 42% of global WPV cases.

Mrs Koleoso-Adelekan said that the fight against polio would be won if all eligible children are immunized. She then appealed for strengthening of the support provided by government, development partners and stakeholders to the immunization programme. Goodwill messages were delivered by a number of partners at the event. In his message, the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Peter Eriki congratulated all tiers of Government for the tremendous progress made in the polio eradication initiative and in the delivery of routine immunization services in the past year. These, he said, have led to boosting child survival and primary health care delivery services in the country.

Dr. Eriki also commended the pro-active involvement of religious and traditional leaders and close dialogue with communities, which he said resulted in state and local government ownership of the programme. Noting that we need all the resources – human, material, technical and financial – to finish the job, Dr. Eriki appealed to everybody to give the end game of polio eradication utmost attention. In his words, “there is a lot of work to be done to achieve this goal, but with the improved technical tools available to the programme, the steep decline of the wild polio virus and the quality of human resources at hand, and above all, the First Lady’s personal involvement, eradication is more feasible within the near future”.

UNICEF Country Representative, Mr. Ayalew Abai commended the First Lady for her presence, which he said was an indication of the importance she attaches to immunization and the well being of Nigerian children. Comparing the fight against polio with a race, Mr. Abai remarked that athletes increase speed and redouble their energies as they approach the finishing line. “This is what we need to do now. We probably have to work harder now than we have ever done before since we see light at the end of the tunnel”, he said. Goodwill messages were also given by representatives of European Union PRIME, Rotary International and USAID.

The flag-off ceremony also featured traditional dances and drama presentations. The highlight of the ceremony was the immunization of children by the First Lady and other` dignitaries present.

Dear Club President and Fellow Rotarians:

The Rotaplast  team recently returned from a very successful Mission to Tacna, Peru.

At the outset of the Mission, 161  potential candidates were screened  for various surgical procedures.   We had three operating rooms at our disposal, and subsequently 86 patients received surgery using a total of 116 procedures.  The cost of this surgery if performed in the U.S. would be $434,300 USD.   We focused mainly on correcting the birth anomaly of cleft lips and palates .  However we also performed reconstructive surgery on burn victims as well as corrective procedures on young patients with webbed toes & fingers.

This was my fifth Rotaplast Mission, and it turned out to be the most gratifying for several reasons.
Our Rotaplast Medical Director, Fred Tomlinson, an extremely skilful plastic surgeon,
expressed his gratitude to the many Clubs in District 5020 who financially supported the Mission.   He asked that this message be conveyed to the Rotary Club members:
"I don't think you have any idea how many lives you have changed and improved"

Plans and negotiations are underway for our next Mission - Santa Cruz, Bolivia
April 27 - May 07/08.     The total cost of this Mission will be $55,000 USand we will hopefully be partnering with the Beverly HillRotary Club.   We will advise you when further details become available.    The Mission is being endorsed by District Governor Norm Watts as part of the District's World Community Projects.

In conclusion, we hope you will consider supporting the next Rotaplast Mission.  It takes so little money to change the lives not only of the patientbut of the entire family.

If you have any question or wish to have a Power Point Presentation, please contact me at the e-mail address below .
